Hueco Tanks State Historic Site

What is a hueco? Imagine a world without, haha, bottled water. The hueco was an oasis in the desert far smaller than a lake; just a large rock basin able to trap and store rainwater. The Hueco Tanks have drawn visitors for millennia and many ancient people have left their marks on the rocks roundabout. The designs of the pictographs are both human and animal, both mask-like designs and chronicles of war. You will need to call ahead to see the pictographs. Also on-site are a ranch house and a stagecoach station’s ruins.

The water of the tanks draws birds in exciting numbers and varieties, and birding tours are also available. The rocky landscape makes for excellent climbing (and walking), thus hiking and bouldering tours are also given. Tours are always free, although many, again, must be arranged in advance.
