Old Tunnel

The Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area may be small, but it rivals and surpasses Austin's Congress Avenue Bridge for bat watching. Three million Brazilian free-tailed bats gather in an old, abandoned railroad tunnel from April through October and emerge enmasse every evening. The birding and star-gazing are also fantastic.

Season: Year-round (bat watching on summer dusks)

Fredericksburg, TX 78624

You'll find a brown sign announcing "Old Tunnel Wildlife Area" a half mile east of Fredericksburg by Highway 290. Turn south at the sign onto Old San Antonio Road and go ten and a half miles. Look for the Old Tunnel to your left.
