San Antonio Birding

Information on Bird Watching

NA

San Antonio is a crossroads between birding areas, where Green Jays, Vermillion Flycatchers, and Chihuahuan Ravens can fly the same skies as the Eastern Bluebird and the Carolina Chickadee. The city also has a somewhat surprising concentration of the Western Scrub Jay and the American Pipit.

Besides, most birdwatching hubs in Texas have a little something unique and San Antonio is no different. Braunig Lake Park draws Mew, Sabine's, and California Gulls, all unusual for the area, as well as the out-of-place Sooty Tern, Great Kiskadee, and the Brown Pelican. The Mitchell Lake Wetlands Refuge gathers Say's Pheobes, Cinnamon Teals, and, rarely, Magnificent Frigatebirds and Reddish Egrets.

Some other interesting species are the Great Horned and Barred Owl, the Red-shouldered Hawk, and the Marsh Wren.
