The Montezuma Quail, once eliminated, has recently been reintroduced, and the rare Spotted Owl can be found here. But birding in Guadalupe Mountains National Park is less about the uniqueness or the rarity and more about the sheer diversity. Phainopeplas and Pyrrhuloxias winter here, and do three species of tanagers (Western, Summer, and Hepatic) settle in the spring. Desert birds like the Loggerhead Shrike, the Scaled Quail, and the Northern Mockingbird reside here with Flammulated and Western Screech Owls. Northern species like the Bushtit, the Pine Siskin, the Mountain Chickadee, and the White-breasted Nuthatch are here as well.
