On San Angelo's Brown Ranch roosts the largest nesting group of Black-chinned Hummingbirds in Texas. The ranch is also home to not only Texas regular the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, but sometimes Texas rarities like the Calliope, Broad-tailed, and Allen's Hummingbird.

San Angelo State Park is also unusual in its way, drawing together the eastern species and markedly southwestern ones. The Chihuahuan Raven, the Cactus Wren, and the Verdin coexist with the Mississippi Kite and the Yellow-billed Cuckoo. The park is also home to a large variety of woodpeckers, several that don't occur quite so commonly in the state, such as the Northern Flicker, the Yellow-bellied and Red-naped Sapsucker, and the Acorn and Red-head Woodpecker. Watch for Say's Pheobe as well.

Other common species are the Summer Tanager, the Scaled and Bobwhite Quail, the Wild Turkey, the Canyon Towhee, and the Lark Sparrow.
