This base has been in use by the army since 1849, if anti-aircraft and missile defense was certainly not its original purpose. Calling ahead will let you tour the base, and its original adobe buildings. The Fort Bliss Museums covers most of the wars of the 20th century and gathers artifacts from its own long past. And the military surplus stores are certainly nearby and plentiful.
