Rio Grande - Boquillas Canyon

Rio Grande - Boquillas Canyon

Boquillas Canyon marks a long and leisurely run between canyon walls that climb to 1,200 feet, but despite their size, are more awesome than oppressive. Since this segment of the river is 33 miles long, it’s impossible to do in a day. Plan instead for two to four days. And don’t plan for strenuous rapids . . . this canyon never gets fiercer than Class II.

Rio Grande Village is where you'll put in and Heath Canyon is where you'll put out. While you float those miles and miles between, keep an eye on the Mexican side of the river. You'll likely see the ruins of the candelilla wax mining camps.

Rio Grande River Up to Class IV
4 or more days
The Rio Grande is more than a river, it is a boundary between countries. But even so, it remains remote and lonely, the Chihuahuan Desert surrounding it closely as opposed to city after city.
